Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), Longowal, Sangrur is a public engineering institution promoted in 1989 by the Government of India and formally inaugurated on December 20, 1991. The institute is an autonomous body fully funded by the Government of India and managed by the SLIET Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. SLIET was established with a vision to act as an international podium for the development and transfer of technical competence in academics. The institute is committed to provide the best possible technical education and cater to the technical manpower requirements with emphasis on practical training in industry. The institute awards its own certificates, diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees approved and recognised by AICTE, New Delhi. It also offers PhD programmes after having attained the status of Deemed to be University.
Spread over 451 acres, the institute campus hosts the central library stocked with volumes of technical books along with a collection of books on literature, general awareness, management, moral sciences etc, subscription to various national and international journals and equipped with facilities such as Plasma TV, MMP, CTV, OHP, Slide Projector etc. The Central Workshop houses various shops fully equipped to provide centralised training to certificate and diploma students as well as UG and PG students to carry out their fabrication projects and experimental work in the areas of metal cutting, EDM, processing of composites, welding, friction welding, friction-stir welding etc. The workshop is also used for carrying out research activities for PhD scholars in EDM, metal cutting etc. The workshop is equipped with modern and sophisticated machinery, well qualified technical staff, shop floor environment, advanced tools and equipments. The different types of workshops include machine shop, tool room, arc welding shop, gas welding shop, pattern shop, carpentry shop, sheet metal shop, fitting shop, foundry shop and forging shop. Other facilities include reading room, canteen, health centre, indoor games room, gymnasium, visitor room, guest room (for parents) etc.

Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET) achieved the status of Deemed University in 2006 and has been accredited by NAAC and NBA. All the degree programmes are accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education in 2003 and Impact Assessment and Review were conducted by Educational Consultants India in 2004.
