Sudha Murthy at KBC: Was asked not to talk to boys during engineering

November 27, 2019

Indian engineering teacher and author Sudha Murthy is set to occupy the hot seat in the Karamveer special show of Kaun Banega Crorepati 11 finale episode on Friday, November 29.

In the teaser recently aired by the channel, Amitabh Bachchan welcomed Mrs Murthy and praised her for exemplary work to help the underprivileged. He also shared she was the first woman engineer in Hooghly, West Bengal.

In the teaser, Sudha Murty tells Big B that when she decided to become an engineer in 1968, her decision was opposed by her family members, who thought no suitable match in the community would marry her if she became an engineer.

Murthy further added that she was the only woman in the college which had 599 boys. The principal had agreed to admit her since she had scored well, but she was asked to wear a sari, and advised not to go to the college canteen or talk to the boys.

She also shared that she had no issues with the sari and the canteen food was bad. She added when it came to the boys, she didn’t talk to them for a year, but then in the second year, when boys from her class learnt she stood first, they started talking to her instead.

This made the audience break into applause. She told Big B that the main difficulty she faced was with the toilets. There was none during her course and she realised the importance of one while studying. Hence, when she assumed the office of the chairman of Infosys Foundation, she sponsored the construction of 16,000 toilets.

She also shared the learnings of her father which helped her touch the hearts of people. The audience applauds her for the pearls of wisdom she shares.
