Thane school switches to online classes over mosquito-borne illness concerns

June 18, 2025

A private school in Maharashtra’s Thane city has temporarily moved to online classes following concerns about possible mosquito-borne illnesses affecting several students and teachers.

The school announced that online classes for students from nursery to Class 10 will be conducted from 18 to 28 June as a precaution. However, the management dismissed reports of a dengue outbreak as “baseless allegations with vested interests”.

In a statement, the school said the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) carried out a health inspection and found no evidence of mosquito breeding on campus. “We have proactively fumigated the premises and installed mosquito nets on all windows to ensure safety,” a school representative said.

Dr Prasad Patil, medical officer of health at the TMC, confirmed that a civic team had inspected the school on Monday after receiving complaints from parents. While no active mosquito breeding was found, the team identified several potential breeding sites.

“We destroyed items such as pots, torn tyres, and old furniture where stagnant water could collect,” Dr Patil said. He added that extensive spraying and fogging were carried out on the school premises and at nearby construction sites.
