Sited atop a 300 ft. high hill fort in Gwalior, the all-boys Scindia School was established in 1897 as the Sardar’s School by Maharaja Madhavrao Jayajirao Scindia of Gwalior to educate sons of the princedom’s nobility. Scindia’s first British principal F.G. Pearce, an alumnus of Oxford University, was deeply influenced by Indian philosophy. He gave form and substance to the school’s uniquely Indian ethos and built the foundations of an institutional culture known as ‘Scindian’— “with India at the heart of the descriptive” — to this day.

Modelled on the best public schools around the world, Scindia has evolved into a 21st century boarding school offering a unique blend of academic, co-curricular, sports and life skills education to its 550 students mentored by 60 well-qualified teachers. In the latest EducationWorld India School Rankings (EWISR) 2018-19, this CBSE-affiliated class VI-XII school is ranked #2 countrywide and #1 in the state.

Scindia School’s spacious 160-acre campus is sited within the 8th century Gwalior Fort, perhaps the sole education institution worldwide to be sited there. A magnificent citadel constructed on an elevated escarpment, the fort also houses palaces, several taals (water bodies), and temples. Facilities include a library housing 11,000 books, 30 Smart classrooms, five well-equipped computer labs with 200 desktops and 400 laptops and 1,500-seats amphitheatre.

Scindia School alumni have been welcomed into the world’s top-ranked higher education institutions, often with scholarships. Among them: Illinois and Wisconsin universities and Rollins College (USA); Westminster, Hertfordshire and Cardiff universities, University of Arts London (UK). Within India, Scindia school-leavers are routinely admitted into the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal; Vellore Institute of Technology and Ashoka University.

The school’s prominent alumni include Ameen Sayani, pioneer radio jockey and Padma Shri awardee; Lt. Gen. Samer Pal Singh Dhillon, former deputy chief of Army Staff; Shiv Shankar Menon, diplomat and former National Security Adviser of India; filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
