UGC asks varsities to implement EWS quota soon

The University Grant Commission (UGC) has asked the higher education institutions of the country to implement the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota reservation soon. The UGC issued a notice today to all the government varsities for the implementation of the reservation for EWS. It has been implemented in many of the educational institutes of the country and is also available for government jobs. Those institutions which are yet to implement the quota, UGC asked them to do as soon as possible.

The letter issued by the UGC in this regard reads as, “Kindly find the enclosed herewith a copy of the MHRD Office Memorandum dated January 17, 2019, regarding the implementation of reservation for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) for admissions in Higher Education Institutions, in accordance with One Hundred and Third Amendment of Constitution of India, for its immediate implementation and compliance.

The O.M. has been endorsed to Chief Secretaries of all State Government/UTs with a request to give effect to the provisions of the Constitutions (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019 for all higher educational institutions funded/aided, directly or indirectly, by the State Government in such manner that the provision for reservation for EWS would become operational from the academic year 2019-20.

You are requested to initiate the action to implement the above-mentioned instructions from the academic session 2019-2020 in consultation with your State Government. The scheme for implementing the reservation for the EWS shall be displayed on the website of the institution as soon as possible.”
