The Union Cabinet has approved the new National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The HRD ministry will be renamed as Education Ministry.

The new NEP will replace the existing policy which was first formulated in 1986 and last modified in 1992. The Dr K. Kasturirangan Committee which drafted the new education policy in May last year had proposed to rename the ministry of human resource development or MHRD as Ministry of Education (MoE).

The policy which was approved on Wednesday during a meeting at the residence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed to extend Right to Education Act 2009 to include children in the age group of 3 to 18 years. It has also sought to reduce the syllabus in school education curriculum.
