Founded on June 15, 1960, the University of Burdwan in West Bengal is one of the leading universities in India. Promoted by the West Bengal government as a teaching cum affiliating university, the university offers 30 graduate programmes and boasts 139 affiliated colleges (including degree colleges, B.Ed. colleges and private professional institutes). The 398 acre Burdwan University campus hosts a well-stocked central library, a computer centre, and university science instrumentation centre. Distance education This university houses a Directorate of Distance Education (DDE,BU) for conducting post graduate studies through distance education mode. This is for people (mainly professionals) who cannot undergo post graduate studies through regular (full-time) mode. The Directorate of Distance Education was established in 1994. The distance education courses offered by the university are approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Distance Education Council.
Eligibility for MPhil Any candidate who holds a Master’s degree with 55 percent marks in the concerned subjects may apply for admission. Eligibility for BEd Candidates (both fresh & deputed) with at least 50 percent marks either in theBachelor’s degree (50 percent marks in Bachelor’s degree means 50 percent marks in aggregate i.e. 50percent of total marks of honours subject + elective subjects) and/or in the Master’s degree in Science or Bachelor’s in Engineering or Technology with specialisation in Science and Mathematics with 55 percent marks, or any other qualification equivalent thereto, are eligible for application. The selection for admission to all courses shall be made strictly on the basis of performance of the eligible candidates at the written admission test and qualifying examinations. The university was awarded with the status of a ‘four star university’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2001. The university was re-accreditated with B++ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2007.
