Students of Class 12 of Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Siksha Parishad (UPMSP) will no longer study the works of Nobel laurette Rabindranath Tagore and former president of India Dr. S Radhakrishnan in English from this academic session. According to sources, the board has implemented the NCERT syllabus of English for classes 10 and 12. Stories like The Homecoming by Rabindranath Tagore and Women’s Education (Essay) by S. Radhakrishnan will no longer be part of the new syllabus. Apart from this, Al Hasham’s The Heritage of India has also been removed.
Works of John Milton and PB Shelley will also be removed from the curriculum and so would An Astrologer’s Day by RK Narayan and The Lost Child by Mulk Raj Anand.
Sarojini Naidu’s The Village Song and works of C. Rajagopalachari, WM Raeburn and R Srinivasan have also failed to find a place in Class 10 syllabus.
Senior officials said that these changes have received approval from the state. They further stated that these would be soon featured on the Board’s official website.
Now that the NCERT syllabus will be implemented, students would have to study less than before. Earlier, there were four books in Class 12 besides grammar but now students would only have to study two books- Flamingo and Vistas. According to the new syllabus, students would have study works of Anees Jung, William Douglas and Louis Fischer. In poetry, poems by Kamala Das, Pablo Neruda and John Keats will be part of the syllabus.
FOr class 10 too, students have to study only two books-First Flight and Footprints without Feet. Apart from this, they would also study works of Anti-Apartheid Revolutionary and former president of Africa Nelson Mandela, author N Frank and Russian writer Anton Checkov. WOrks of Robert Frost, Walt Wiltman, William Butler Yeats would also be there.
