In a significant move towards inclusive education, the Uttar Pradesh government, in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched the ‘Sugamya Worksheets’ initiative aimed at supporting nearly 2.96 lakh children with special needs across the state.
This initiative, designed to improve foundational learning while fostering self-confidence and inclusion, will serve differently-abled pupils from Classes 1 to 8. According to an official statement released on Wednesday, the project marks a major stride in mainstreaming Divyang (differently-abled) children by equipping them with appropriate educational tools and support systems.
A total of 1,900 worksheets have been developed—1,300 for Classes 1 to 5 and 600 for Classes 6 to 8—covering subjects such as Hindi and Mathematics. These worksheets cater to all disability categories except children with complete visual impairment. The materials have been specially designed using simple language, bright visuals, and interactive formats to make learning accessible, engaging, and effective.
With printing already completed, distribution to all districts is currently underway. At the block and school levels, delivery of the worksheets is being ensured, and their rollout will follow a phased approach. Pupils will receive one set at a time, and only after completing and getting it assessed by teachers will they be given the next set.
To facilitate effective learning, teachers have been instructed to encourage pupils to complete the worksheets through individual, paired, and group activities. Prior to each set, teachers are also expected to conduct brief discussions or introductory activities to set the context for learning.
Pupils will be allowed to take the worksheets home after evaluation for continued practice. Additionally, special educators will regularly visit schools to monitor worksheet availability and address challenges faced by pupils. Their observations will be compiled in monthly reports, which district coordinators will review to provide targeted guidance and feedback.
UP basic education minister Sandeep Singh hailed the initiative as more than just an educational reform. “This initiative is not just an innovation in education but a strong step towards building an inclusive and empathetic society,” he said.
The ‘Sugamya Worksheets’ initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to ensure that no child is left behind in the journey of education, irrespective of their physical or cognitive challenges.
