World Sanskrit Day: UGC asks colleges to hold special events

World Sanskrit Day or Sankrit Diwas is celebrated every year to promote and cherish the ancient language and was first celebrated back in 1969. In a special message in Sanskrit, Union Education Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank has underlined the importance of Sanskrit language.

A unique language, Sanskrit boasts of the largest vocabulary in the world and is also a computer-friendly language. The National Education Policy (NEP) which was introduced on July 29 gives added focus to Sanskrit as well. On July 31, the University Grants Commission (UGC) asked affiliated universities and institutes to organise Sanskrit Day events to celebrate the day.

The Consortium of Sanskrit Universities is celebrating the ancient language from July 31 to August 6, 2020, by organising ‘Sanskrit Week Celebration’ that comprises of various online competitions and programmes.

The Central Sanskrit University released the programme schedule earlier and the competitions include Sanskrit storytelling, singing, and poem recitation contests for students in Acharya level or MA and Shastri level or BA, and also for students of classes 9 to 12.

To participate, students can upload their video on Facebook or YouTube and then submit the link of the video to the University’s registration portal. The last date to submit the video is till August 5, 2020 at 5 pm.
