Turiya Uma KalyanAt just 17, Turiya Uma Kalyan, a 12th-grade student from APL Global School, Chennai, has proven that determination and empathy can drive real change. Through her initiative Nambikkai Alai (Tide of Trust), she has not only addressed the socio-economic challenges of fisherfolk communities but has also inspired many with her research-driven, culturally rooted approach. Turiya’s work—blending social consciousness with practical solutions—highlights the transformative power of youth-led grassroots movements in building resilient and empowered communities.

Inspired by her early interactions with the fishing community during beach visits with her father and insights gained through her house help, Turiya sought to support these marginalised groups. “This project taught me that listening and building relationships with the community are essential to creating meaningful change,” Turiya shares, reflecting on her journey.

Her work began with a summer internship in microfinance and a research project on the impact of climate change and digitisation on fisherfolk. During interviews with fisherwomen, she discovered challenges such as a lack of understanding about e-commerce platforms and digital payment systems.

In March 2024, Turiya established a thrift society that raised Rs 90,000 from 30 members, offering loans at a low-interest rate of 1-2 percent. These loans fund economic activities like repairing boats and nets, ensuring financial stability for fisherfolk, particularly during non-productive fishing seasons. She incorporated the community’s cultural practices, involving panchayat leaders in decision-making to build trust and ensure seamless implementation.

Her project also focuses on empowering women. By creating leadership roles for fisherwomen, Nambikkai Alai helps them reclaim financial autonomy in a community often plagued by alcoholism and financial dependence.

While her journey faced hurdles, such as mistrust and corruption during municipal elections, Turiya’s resilience led to significant progress. Her research paper, based on these efforts, has been accepted by the International Women’s Research Conference 2024 and has been published in the International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Turiya aspires to expand Nambikkai Alai to coastal regions nationwide, introducing digital literacy programs and leadership training for women. She credits her parents for their unwavering support, who were instrumental in initiating her connection with the community.

Turiya’s journey reflects the power of empathy and determination in creating tangible social change. By blending cultural understanding with innovative solutions, she has empowered fisherfolk, especially women, to reclaim their financial independence and navigate challenges. Her vision to scale the initiative nationwide, coupled with her commitment to addressing systemic issues, underscores her dedication to making a lasting impact. Turiya’s work is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to creating meaningful change when driven by purpose and perseverance.
