Arunachal shuts 600 schools due to low enrolment: Minister

July 24, 2024

On Wednesday, Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona announced that the state government has closed around 600 schools due to either non-functionality or zero enrolment. During an assembly session, in response to a question from Congress MLA Kumar Waii, Sona indicated that additional schools with low or no enrolment might be shut down as part of an ongoing effort to optimize educational resources. Nearly 600 schools have already been closed or merged with others to consolidate resources and improve efficiency.

Arunachal Pradesh currently has over 2,800 government-run schools across various levels, including lower primary, upper primary, secondary, and higher secondary, supported by more than 7,600 regular teachers. To address the shortage of teachers, the government is managing gaps by appointing temporary staff under the Mukhya Mantri Shiksha Kosh (MMSK) scheme. This initiative is designed to ensure that schools are adequately staffed despite the current shortages.

Furthermore, the state government has requested the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) to conduct recruitment exams to fill permanent teaching positions. This step aims to address the long-term need for qualified educators and enhance the quality of education across the state. The government’s actions reflect a commitment to improving the efficiency of the education system and ensuring that resources are effectively utilized to benefit students.
