Assam: Government to assess students, schools in state-wide drive

January 3, 2024

The Assam government is set to conduct ‘Gunotsav 2024,’ a comprehensive statewide initiative aimed at evaluating the performance of approximately 40 lakh students. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced the commencement of this exercise, scheduled to take place from January 3 to February 8. The initiative is designed to enhance the quality of education and improve learning outcomes across 43,498 government schools spanning 35 districts in the state, encompassing a student population of 39,63,542.

Gunotsav, which involves the active participation of various stakeholders including teachers, students, administrators, and local communities, serves to bolster accountability in ensuring quality education. Pegu outlined the three-phase structure of the evaluation, with the first round covering 12 districts from January 3-6, followed by 13 districts from January 9-12, and the remaining 10 districts concluding the process from February 5-8.

The primary objectives of Gunotsav include identifying learning gaps in individual students, ensuring quality education with grade-specific outcomes, and evaluating school performance in scholastic and co-scholastic areas. Additionally, the initiative will assess the availability and utilization of infrastructure and gauge community participation in the education process.

To facilitate the evaluation process, a total of 18,098 external evaluators will be deployed throughout Assam. Distinguished individuals, including the chief minister, MLAs, the chief secretary, and college teachers, among others, will actively participate in the process as external evaluators.

Gunotsav, initiated in 2017, has successfully completed four rounds of evaluations, covering all districts in Assam. The upcoming 2024 edition continues the state’s commitment to enhancing educational standards and fostering an environment conducive to continuous improvement.
