The All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU) announced on Wednesday a series of protest actions due to alleged neglect and deprivation by the Assam government towards the Tiwa community.
Speaking at a press conference, ATSU President Cheniram Malang highlighted their longstanding demands for constitutional status under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution and expressed concern over the declining government funds allocated to the Tiwa autonomous council. He noted disparities in funding compared to other councils like Miching and Rabha.
Malang criticized unfulfilled promises by the Chief Minister, including land allocation for the Jonbeel Mela, an important cultural event, which contrasted with recent construction activities by the ruling BJP. He emphasized that these actions have damaged the community’s pride and dignity.
To push for their demands, ATSU General Secretary Biman Pratim Masreng announced a series of protests, starting with a three-hour sit-in at Morigaon town on July 19. Further actions include a protest on August 27 to mark what they deem as the CM’s failure to address their issues. Masreng warned of escalating protests such as highway and railway blockades, economic disruptions, and a region-wide shutdown in the second phase, urging participation from all ethnic groups in Central Assam.
