A teacher at a private law college in Kolkata, who was initially asked not to attend classes wearing a hijab but was later informed that a headscarf would be allowed, has decided not to rejoin her workplace. The college management stated that it “honors” her decision.
Sanjida Qadar, the teacher in question, officially communicated her decision via email to the college management. In her message, she expressed that she would not be resuming her duties and intended to explore new opportunities, as she believed this was the best option for her career at this time.
In an email to Qadar on June 10, the management of LJD Law College in Tollygunge indicated that she could resume her normal duties, provided she adhered to the dress code for faculty members. They specified that “during her classes, she can use a dupatta as a headscarf.”
After taking a week to consider her options, Qadar sent a follow-up email on Thursday, stating, “After careful consideration of your order, I have decided not to rejoin your institute and rather explore new opportunities, since I believe that this is the best option for my career goals at this time.” She also told PTI that continuing in the current situation would not be comfortable for her.
The college management responded to her communication by saying they “honored” her decision and wished her luck and a prosperous career.
Qadar had been wearing the headscarf at her workplace since the month of Ramzan in April, but the issue seemed to escalate over the past week, leading to the current situation.
