Interim vice-chancellors of state universities, newly appointed by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, participated in a meeting organized by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The meeting took place in the city and comes amid a dispute between the Raj Bhavan and the state’s TMC government over the appointment of these acting VCs.
This gathering aimed to foster discussions among the central minister, vice-chancellors, and university authorities to address academic matters and improve the higher education system, as explained by a BJP leader.
Attendees included Soma Banerjee from West Bengal University of Teachers’ Training, Education Planning, and Administration, Santa Dutta, the interim VC of Calcutta University, Rathin Banerjee, the interim VC of North Bengal University, and Susanta Chakraborty, the interim VC of Vidyasagar University.
This meeting followed a previous gathering organized by the state’s higher education department, which was attended by only 12 out of 31 registrars due to concerns related to the Raj Bhavan, as stated by state Education Minister Bratya Basu. The governor had recently appointed interim VCs for eight universities that had been without permanent VCs since April and May when their terms expired.
