What is Computer Science?

Computer Science is the study of computers, algorithmic processes and computational systems. The discipline of computer science ranges from the theoretical study of algorithms and data structures, computer and network design, modeling data and information processes to the practical issues of implementing computational systems in hardware and software. Computer science also makes heavy use of hypothesis testing and experimentation during the conceptualization, design, measurement, and refinement of new algorithms, information structures, and computer architectures.

Steve Jobs

“I think everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer, should learn a computer language, because it teaches you how to think. I view computer science as a liberal art. It should be something that everyone takes.”

— Steve Jobs
Co-founder and CEO, Apple Inc.,
pioneer of personal computer revolution

Alfred Aho“Computer Science is a science of abstraction -creating the right model for a problem and devising the appropriate mechanizable techniques to solve it.”

— Alfred Aho,
Canadian computer scientist,
recipient of the 2020 Turing Award
