The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked parents who wish to admit their wards to a school affiliated with the board to check the affiliation status of the institution.

The board has drawn the attention of parents because it had come to its notice that several schools which do not have the board affiliation were misleading parents and attracting them to admit their wards to such schools through false advertisements.

According to the board many non-affiliated schools whose application for affiliation is under process, or rejected by the board or not applied for affiliation at all would display boards at their schools, prominent locations or in the institution website in the locality showing messages like “to be affiliated with CBSE”, “CBSE Pattern”, “likely to be affiliated with CBSE”, “running under the aegis of CBSE”, “CBSE course/Curriculum”, “CBSE registered” etc.”

“It has come to the notice that despite clear directions of the Board, a number of schools are indulging in nefarious activities thereby misleading the stakeholders,” according to CBSE secretary Anurag Tripathi.

Apart from cautioning parents, the board has also asked schools to refrain from using CBSE name or logo without affiliation.

This is the second time since March last year the board has alerted parents on affiliation status of schools.

A school can run without affiliation of the board till Class VIII. An upcoming school must have valid affiliation of the board before it starts running Class IX. The affiliation is necessary before running Class IX because students appearing in the Class X board exam are supposed to get registered with the board in Class IX, a CBSE official said.

CBSE sources said many students who studied in non-affiliated schools would often face problems to continue their studies after completing Class VIII.

“As per provision under clause 14.2.2 of CBSE Affiliation bye-laws, the CBSE does not allow non-affiliated schools’ to present the candidates to the Board examinations,” said Tripathi in a notice issued by the board secretary on Tuesday.

The list of schools affiliated with the board are given in the CBSE website.

The board has advised the parents to check the list and find out whether the school in which they wish to admit their ward is included in the list or not.

“The parents may go through the CBSE Affiliation website at http://saras.cbse.gov.in/cbse_aff/welcome.aspx where link for searching list of affiliated school is given,” the notice read.
