CBSE detects theory-practical mark variations; advises review

June 6, 2024

The CBSE has identified notable discrepancies between theory and practical marks in certain subjects for over 50% of students in more than 500 schools. The Board has recommended these schools review their internal assessment procedures, officials announced on Wednesday.

The schools are encouraged to focus on fairness and accuracy in practical exams to ensure a realistic and valuable academic experience for students.

“The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), using advanced AI tools, found significant variations between theory and practical marks in certain subjects among 50% or more students in around 500 CBSE-affiliated schools, based on historical data,” said CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta.

“This discrepancy underscores the need for careful evaluation during practical exams in schools. Consequently, the Board has advised these schools to reassess their internal assessment methods,” he added.

The CBSE emphasized that the goal is to establish a more robust, transparent, and reliable system to ensure that the assessment process is realistic and meaningful for students’ academic progress.

“This advisory serves as a reminder to uphold fairness and precision in practical assessments, thereby improving the quality of education in CBSE-affiliated schools,” Gupta said.
