Congress criticizes NTA, cites CUET for youth pursuing education abroad

July 3, 2024

On Wednesday, the Congress criticized the National Testing Agency (NTA) for the delay in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) results and argued that this exam is one reason why more youngsters are seeking undergraduate education abroad. Originally scheduled for June 30, the CUET results have yet to be announced. University Grants Commission Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar stated that the NTA is working on the results and will soon announce a date.

The CUET, conducted in a hybrid mode for the first time nationwide from May 15, was canceled in Delhi on May 14 due to logistical issues and rescheduled for May 29. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the NTA for its credibility issues, mentioning that the CUET results might now be declared by July 10, despite an earlier promise of June 30. He also noted that the NTA relies on private vendors with questionable credentials for testing, lacks professional expertise, and hasn’t shifted its chairman despite previous testing issues.

Ramesh alleged that the CUET contributes to the increasing number of youngsters pursuing education abroad. Following irregularities in the NEET and NET exams, the Centre recently replaced NTA Director General Subodh Singh and set up a high-level panel led by former ISRO chief R. Radhakrishnan to ensure fair examinations. The NEET and UGC-NET exams faced scrutiny for alleged paper leaks and integrity issues, prompting CBI investigations. Additionally, the CSIR-UGC NET and NEET-PG exams were canceled as a precaution.
