Creative parenting: Get your child to feel like a winner

School toppers, achievers and record-breakers are hailed as winners. But what about children who are not in the Top 10, or have not made a mark in any field? Are they losers? Certainly not. Every parent knows how talented and special her child is. Here are some ways to make your child feel like a winner. – Nisha Daniel

A Birthday Art Show
Does your child love art? Craft? Writing? Photography? Encourage her creative pursuit, and work together to prepare an exhibition of her work at her birthday party.

  • Take the opportunity to encourage her to improve her skill and produce better work.
  • Help her to evaluate and select the best efforts and frame them or create a suitable display.
  • Her birthday party could be a great occasion to celebrate her talent.

The Winning Moments Diary
Every time you feel proud of something your child has done, write it down. It could be the moment your child gave away her burger to a poor child on the street; or the day she controlled her anger when someone else was provocative. If something made you feel proud of your child, write it down.

  • Get a scrapbook, and let your child help you embellish it. Label it ‘Winning Moments of X’. Write or print out your record of every winning moment and paste it with photos or stickers in the scrapbook. She’ll love to read each entry.
