The first New Year sunrise Special festivities herald the New Year at Kiribati Island, also known as Christmas Island. It is the very first country to welcome the New Year!

Though there are numerous other islands in the sea nearby, Christmas Island is officially recognised as the first to welcome the New Year as it lies snug between the Australian time zone and the International date line.

With the first sunrise predicted at 5:45 a.m. (local Kiribati time), all hotels along the shore line are fully booked early, and a whole lot of celebrations and events lined up. Tourists and backpackers headed to the tiny island to watch the first sunrise.

The island thrives on this kind of tourism. Private jets, which cost a pretty penny, offer the affluent a tour of “chasing the sunrise” around the islands in the wee early morning hours!

But sadly, due to rising water levels because of global warming, these islands are expected to be completely submerged by the year 2045. Where will the first sunrise come up then? Let’s wait and watch!
