Dr. O.P. Bhalla Foundation recycles 55,000 kg of paper into notebooks for govt school students

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Dr. O.P. Bhalla Foundation at Manav Rachna Educational Institutions (MREI), a social development arm of Manav Rachna Educational Institutions, created in memory of visionary educationist Dr. O.P. Bhalla, has reaffirmed its dedication to sustainability and education through its Raddi Recycling Initiative.

The initiative has successfully repurposed 55,000 kilograms of wastepaper and cardboard into notebooks for children studying in government schools and with partner NGOs. Launched in 2022, this eco-conscious program continues to transform paper waste collected across the Manav Rachna campus into essential learning materials.

Transforming Waste into Opportunity

To date, over 25,000 notebooks have been produced, with 15,000 already distributed to students at:

“This initiative reflects our drive to link sustainability with education,” said Dr. Vaishali Mathur, senior program manager at the foundation. “By turning wastepaper into useful learning material, we are setting an example of how even small actions can make a difference.”

Collective Action for a Better Future

Dr. N. C. Wadhwa, Director General, MREI and vice chairman of the foundation, highlighted the collective spirit behind the effort: “Behind every recycled notebook is the effort of students, staff, and volunteers who believe in creating impact through collective action.”

Satya Bhalla, Chief Patron, MREI and chairperson of the foundation, added: “This initiative carries forward Dr. O.P. Bhalla’s vision of an inclusive and empowered India with deep compassion. It not only combines care for the environment and children’s education but also inspires a sense of togetherness and hope.”

Through year-round collection drives and campus-wide participation, the Foundation demonstrates how environmental stewardship and community upliftment can go hand in hand.
