Sited on a sprawling 600-acre campus in Atlanta, the Georgia Institute of Technology (aka Georgia Tech, estb. 1885) is globally renowned for science and technology research and education. In its annual league tables, the U.S. News & World Report routinely ranks Georgia Tech among America™s Top 10 public universities and its school of engineering among the Top 5. Internationally too, Georgia Tech is ranked high at #25 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012-13, and its engineering school is among the global Top 10.
Founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology to aid the development of an industrial economy in the vanquished post-civil war southern states of America, Georgia Tech has since matured into a highly-respected science and technology education and research institution with an aggregate enrolment of 21,500 students instructed by 1,000 faculty. Georgia™s six colleges ” engineering, architecture, computing, sciences, Scheller College of Business, and Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts ” offer a wide range of undergrad, postgrad and doctoral study programmes.

Atlanta. The administrative capital of the state of Georgia, Atlanta (pop. 443,000) is a cultural, technology, financial, and healthcare hub of south-eastern USA. Hosting the headquarters of over 24 Fortune 500 companies, including Coca-Cola and The Home Depot, Atlanta offers Georgia Tech students great corporate internships and research opportunities. It also houses a large number of museums ranging from history to fine arts, natural history, and beverages. Moreover, the city boasts 45 universities, colleges, and institutions of higher learning, and the nation™s third largest college student enrolment, ranking sixth nationwide for the number of students attending degree-conferring institutions.

Atlanta has a temperate climate, with hot, humid summers and mild, but occasionally chilly winters. Summer temperatures average 32oC, while in winter they hover around 11oC.

Campus facilities. Georgia Tech’s campus is located in the heart of Atlanta. Although a number of skyscrapers ” most visibly the headquarters of AT&T, The Coca-Cola Company, and Bank of America ” are visible from all points, the campus itself has few buildings over four stories. The institute™s scenic 600-acre, tree-lined campus is next door to museums, music venues, stadia, shopping districts, restaurants and numerous public attractions. While the West and East campuses house residential apartments and dormitories, the Central Campus hosts the majority of academic, research, and administrative buildings. The Technology Square houses the college of business, Advanced Technology Development Centre, and a Barnes & Noble bookstore, among other facilities.

The varsity’s library offers access to over 1 million print volumes, a complete collection of US patents, and more than 2 million technical reports, government documents, and industrial standards. Sited bang in the middle of the campus, the Ferst Center is a state-of-the-art facility boasting a 1,155-seat auditorium, and routinely hosts music, theater, dance, and opera performances.

Sports facilities are extensive and include the McCamish Pavilion (basketball); Byers Tennis complex; aquatic centre; Arthur B. Edge Intercollegiate Athletics Center; John and Mary Brock Football Practice Facility; Bobby Dodd Stadium (football); George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility; O’Keefe Gymnasium (volleyball); Russ Chandler Stadium (baseball); Shirley Clements Mewborn Field (softball) and Zelnak Basketball Center.

Other campus amenities include over 20 restaurants, including three dining halls and a food court, and the Student Center which offers a variety of food options, entertainment venues, meeting spaces, post office and other services. Moreover, with over 450 student including 50 Greek organisations, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of socio-cultural activities.

Admission. Georgia Tech is a highly selective institution ” in 2013, of 17,678 student applicants, only 2,700 were admitted. The minimum eligibility requirement for admission into Georgia Tech’s undergraduate B.Sc programmes is successful completion of Plus Two. Applicants are required to submit the following SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and/or ACT (American College Testing) test results ” SAT Critical Reading/ACT English; SAT Math/ACT Math; SAT Writing/ACT Combined English/Writing. However, foreign students are not obliged to submit TOEFL/IELTS test score results. The deadline for submitting the common application form is December 15 together with SAT/ACT scores, official secondary school report, extra-curricular activities report and personal essays.

Accommodation. The institute offers a number of on-campus housing options. Freshmen students are assigned traditional halls with the choice of double, triple, and quad-occupancy rooms all of which are equipped with broadband internet access. Other accommodation includes two suite-style buildings offering twin-sharing rooms, and apartment-style halls featuring full kitchens, furnished living areas, and private bedrooms with semiprivate bathrooms.

Degree programmes. Georgia Tech offers 34 undergraduate majors, 37 Masters and 30 doctoral programmes as well as pre-professional programmes in law, dentistry, medicine, teaching, veterinary and pharmacy (see box).
