The Gujarat legislative assembly recently passed a resolution unanimously, urging the state’s BJP government to take necessary actions for the effective implementation of the education department’s decision to introduce teachings from the ‘Bhagavad Gita’ in schools. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) expressed its support for the resolution, there was initial opposition from Congress members, which later turned into unanimous approval during the voting process. The state education department had previously announced its plan to teach principles and values from the ‘Shrimad Bhagavad Gita’ in schools from Class 6 to 12, starting from the next academic year.
Minister of State for Education, Praful Pansheriya, introduced the resolution in the assembly, emphasizing the significance of integrating Indian culture into the curriculum to instill pride and a connection to India’s rich heritage. The government’s decision aims to systematically introduce the values and principles of the Bhagavad Gita into various subjects from Class 6 to 12. Pansheriya highlighted the universal impact of the Bhagavad Gita and urged the state government to take all necessary steps for its full and effective implementation.
While AAP extended full support to the resolution, members of the Congress party criticized it, claiming that it was brought to divert attention from the government’s failures. Their objection was not against introducing the Gita in the curriculum but against what they perceived as a publicity-driven resolution. The AAP MLA suggested including parts of the Hindu epic ‘Ramayana’ in classes 11 and 12 and called for the appointment of Sanskrit teachers for effective implementation.
