Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched the Mukhyamantri Bal Paushtik Aahar Yojana on Sunday to provide nutritious food to children in government schools. The scheme, introduced in Hamirpur, will complement the existing midday meal program, targeting students from nursery to Class 8 across 15,181 schools. Under this initiative, children will receive boiled eggs or fruits once a week. Currently, 5.34 lakh students benefit from the midday meal scheme, and they will now receive additional nutrition through this program. The state has allocated Rs 12.75 crore for the scheme this fiscal year.
Sukhu also announced that 17,510 primary school teachers will receive tablets to promote digitization in education and administrative processes, improving teaching methods and access to digital resources. The tablets will also support teachers’ professional development through online training programs.
Criticizing the previous BJP government for the state’s decline in education quality rankings, Sukhu highlighted his government’s efforts to improve academic standards, including sending teachers abroad for exposure visits and establishing Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools in every assembly constituency. “Teachers have a significant responsibility in driving progress and inspiring change,” Sukhu added.
