On Thursday, the Central Government approved the appointment of Himanshu Gupta (IAS) as the Secretary of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in New Delhi under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education. Gupta, a 2012 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the AGMUT cadre, presently serves as the Director (Education) in the Department of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi. The appointment, effective for a four-year term or until further orders, marks a significant move in the education administration landscape.
Gupta has a distinguished track record, having held key positions in various assignments throughout his career. His contributions range from establishing the first Citizen Facilitation Center in SDM Office during his tenure as SDM Najafgarh, Delhi, to upgrading Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Tissa and establishing mobile network connectivity in the NSCN insurgency-prone district while serving as Deputy Commissioner in Longding District, Arunachal Pradesh.
As Secretary Planning, Information and Public Relations Department, and Special Secretary Chief Minister Office, Arunachal Pradesh, Gupta played a pivotal role in the preparation of the State budget and the initiation of key schemes such as the Arunachal Rising Campaign and the Arunachal Pradesh Entrepreneurship Development Program.
His tenure as Deputy Commissioner Karol Bagh, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, saw the establishment of a Dog Park in Rajinder Nagar, the introduction of Garbage Cafes, and park Libraries in the Karol Bagh region. His recent role as Director Education, Government of NCT of Delhi, involved the establishment of a Montessori Laboratory in Government School, Rajinder Nagar and the conceptualization of a plan to establish 100 Montessori Laboratories in governmentt Schools. Additionally, as Chairperson Schools of Specialized Excellence, he forged partnerships with IIT Delhi, NIFT, and TISS for revamping the school curriculum as per NEP 2020.
The order further stated, “He may kindly be relieved of his duties immediately with instructions to take up his new assignment.” This appointment holds significance in the realm of education administration, and Gupta’s extensive experience and expertise as a civil servant are expected to contribute to the effective functioning of CBSE during his tenure as Secretary. The immediate release from his current responsibilities underlines the urgency and importance attached to this new role.
