Jadavpur University (JU), Kolkata – an autonomous state university – was founded on December 24, 1955 by the Government of West Bengal with support from the Government of India. Jadavpur University is semi-residential and operates out of two urban campuses – one in Jadavpur spread over 58 acres and another one in Salt Lake spread over 26 acres.
The university aims to promote higher education by linking up traditionally separate subjects in the light of the ever-changing global scenario; to explore new dimensions of academic administration free of bureaucratic impediments and to set up a role model for academic leadership.
JU also has other institutes like the Jawahari Devi Birla Institute of Commerce and Management, Jadavpur Vidyapith and the Institute of Business Management. These institutes operate in independent campuses and have their own independent curriculum as well as examination systems but the final degree is offered by JU.
There are 13 (four for girls and nine for boys) hostels with provision for accommodating over 1600 students (977 boys students and 655 girls students). The hostel mess is operated by the Students’ Mess Committee under the guidance of the superintendent of the respective hostel.
At the main hostel complex, the ladies hostel complex and beside the old P.G. hostel, there are private canteens supervised by the students’ committee. The main hostel complex is situated outside the campus. The university also offers an exclusive hostel for research scholars.
