Overview

Promoted in 2010 by renowned educationist Pinky Dalal and her son Kunal Dalal, JBCN International School, Borivali, Mumbai is a part of the JBCN Education group which has promoted three other co-ed day K-12 schools in Parel, Oshiwara and Chembur.

Affiliated with the Cambridge Assessment International Examinations (CAIE), UK and Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), the school aims to nurture inquiring young minds through unique and stimulating teaching approaches that incorporate the best of national and international curricula. The school offers a learning experience that, while remaining firmly rooted in Indian values, enables students to become capable leaders and effective communicators who can adapt effortlessly to a culturally diverse and ever-changing world.

Over the years, JBCN Borivali has carved a niche for itself as a ‘sustainable’ institution. This USP is reflected in every aspect of the school, from adopting the UN Sustainable Development Goals into the curriculum to foster global citizenship and thought leadership in the learners from a young age to the EduCreative experience that comprises a gamut of practical, cultural and challenging activities designed to support the personal and social development of the young learners.

Campus

The school’s purpose-built 0.8 acre campus hosts state-of-the-art infrastructure including 66 classrooms equipped with ICT teaching-learning facilities, three well-equipped science labs, two hi-tech computer labs, a well resourced library stocked with an exhaustive collection of print volumes and a wide choice of digital resources, among others.

Committed to the holistic development of students, JBCN Borivali hosts an impressive sports infrastructure including a swimming pool, skating rink, facilities for football, cricket, handball, archery, self defense and hockey and for indoor sports like Karate, carrom, chess etc.

Academics

The school offers classes from Nursery through the A levels/Class XII and follows a variety of teaching methodologies to cater to the diverse learning needs and requirements of the learners. The classroom environment is inclusive and accepting giving each learner the freedom and safety to voice opinions, experiment with strategies and assume responsibility. The school supports experiential learning by providing the internal and external infrastructure, additional and specialised staff for helping learners through this exciting journey.

Moreover, the school accords high priority to the career progression of teachers with 12-14 days of every academic year earmarked for teacher development programmes.

Pre-primary years: The Reggio-Emilia Approach, Hands-on experiential learning, Storytelling and Story Weaving, Integrated and Trans-disciplinary learning combine conceptual, theoretical, methodological, and translational innovations.

Primary years: The ability to think for themselves is possibly the most important skill that is inculcated here. Starting to use ‘Visible Thinking Routines’ as a teaching strategy in class has helped teachers enrich the classroom ‘content learning’ experience and enhance the learners’ intellectual development. Teachers also experiment with different thinking routines like ‘I see, I think, I wonder’, ‘Zoom-in’, ‘Connect-Extend-Challenge’, ‘I used to think…Now I think’, ’Circle of viewpoints’ and ‘Think-Pair-Share’. These routines are simple and help learners make more meaningful connections between school and their everyday life. The focus gradually shifts from tactile approaches to thinking approaches taking into consideration the needs of specific age groups and the subject requirements. This also maintains progression when following a spiral curriculum but infuses curiosity as different aspects of a singular topic are inquired into, understanding the age limitations.

Secondary and Higher Secondary level: At this level, methods such as Flipped Classroom, Project-Based Learning, Storytelling (teachers create stories that pique the interest of the learners even when explaining challenging concepts in Maths and Science), Gamification and Visual Thinking Routines(VTRs) (use of VTRs like CSI, 3-2-1 Bridge, etc) used by teachers help learners develop their thinking and deepen their content learning across subject areas. Augmented reality(AR), Simulation and Peer teaching promote active learning, interaction and participation amongst learners.

Co-curricular education

Annual events such as the Innovators Convention encourage exploration, experimentation and opportunity to design solutions for real-life problems/ needs, while the Youth Summit infuses amongst learners a sense of formal public speaking, generating awareness on global issues and promoting International mindedness, critical thinking and problem-solving attributes thus helping to augment our vision of sustainability.

As a PASCH School (“Schools: Partners for the Future” initiative) — a global network of 1,800 schools that place a high value on German — JBCN learners have actively participated in and achieved commendable results in the Fit in Deutsch exams.

JBCN students who are a part of EUMIND (Europe Meets India) have regular online collaborative sessions with their counterparts in the Netherlands. Students have also participated in various Global international rounds of the World Scholars cup with some of them participating in the TOC (Tournament of Champions) round of the World Scholars Cup at the prestigious Yale University.

Students have organised various assemblies, participated in various beach and national park clean-up drives and many other environmental initiatives as part of the school’s initiatives to promote sustainability.

The EduCreative Experience at JBCN Borivali comprises a gamut of practical, cultural and challenging activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young learners
