Karnataka: 25 students test Covid positive after schools reopen

As many as 25 students studying in second pre-university course (PUC) were found infected with coronavirus in the Morarji Residential School at Garagandur village, Kodagu district authorities said on Wednesday.

As per the information received, one student tested positive for the virus and the school administration requested doctors concerned to test all the students.

The swabs of all 38 students were collected on January 23 and the reports arrived on Wednesday which showed 25 positive cases.

According to the school authorities, 22 staff members, including teachers, are working there and now all are quarantined at the Covid hospital at Madikeri, the district headquarters town of Kodagu.

The students are isolated from each other in rooms and the district administration has deputed officials to take care of them, the officials said.

Earlier, more than 25 teachers tested positive for Covid-19 after schools and colleges reopened in the state on January 1, 2021. About 18 teachers tested Covid positive in Belagavi district. While talking to the media on January 5, 2021, the DC of Belagavi, MG Hiremath admitted that four teachers from Chikkodi and 18 from Belagavi have tested positive for the virus. He had said, “We restarted educational institutions under the Vidyagama scheme of the government by taking all precautions. For instance, in Kadoli, four teachers in a school have tested positive. We have sealed the school and it will be reopened a week later after it is full sanitised.”
