The department of pre-university education in Karnataka has allowed unaided PU colleges across the state to accommodate 20 additional students this academic year.
Unaided PU colleges can admit upto 80 students per section in each combination currently as per the guidelines of the PU department. The same can now be increased to 100 seats.
In a circular issued by the department on Tuesday, colleges have been asked to send proposals if an additional number of accommodations need to be made for students.
The same comes with a set of conditions. Unaided colleges must approach the Deputy Directors of Pre-university Education and submit proposals in case there is an increased demand for a particular combination offered by the college.
Based on the available facilities and faculty student ratio, approval will be granted to these colleges. However, should the number exceed 100 in any classroom, the college managements must seek approval from the department of PU Education and if agreed upon, start another section for students.
“Sometimes, in unaided colleges, we get requests for accommodating 5 or 10 students more as there is demand for a given course. In such a case, exceptions can be made upto 20 additional students,” said a source.
Even in the aided colleges, if need be high in rural areas, college managements have been asked to submit proposals to the DDPUE for additional intake. However, such students will not be eligible for any aid from the government and be considered as unaided students.
