Karnataka: School authorities slapped with sedition after anti-CAA play by students

School authorities of Shaheen Education Institute in Karnataka’s Bidar have been booked with sedition charges for staging a play against the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens. The management was booked under sections 124A (sedition), 504 (provoke breach of peace), 505(2) (statements promoting enmity), 153A (promoting communal hatred) and 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the Karnataka Police, the students performed a play against the CAA and NRC on Republic Day. The play included derogatory words against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and showed him bad light, the police added. 

In the play, the participating children say that if anyone asks for documents, then they should be hit with slippers. SP Bidar said they were questioning the students who participated in the skit in order to know who tutored them.

The report further states that another person, named Mohammed Yousuf Rahim was been booked for allegedly sharing a video of the skit on social media.

Local reports also said Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student body of the Rashtriya Swaymsevak Sangh (RSS), also staged a protest against the institute and submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Amit Shah.
