December 18, 2023

An incident of students being made to clean toilets and septic tanks in a government-run residential School in Karnataka’s Kolar district has irked social media users after the incident went viral.

The incident which happened at a Morarji Desai Residential School at Yaluvahalli in Malur a few days ago came to light on Sunday after the photographs of the incident surfaced. The school is run by the Minorities department.

In another incident involving the school, it was reported that students were asked to kneel with bags on their shoulders overnight and one of the students fainted due to exhaustion.

Even as department authorities insisted that this was part of a cleanliness exercise, teachers clarified that students were cleaning a septic tank according to a report by Deccan Herald.

Around five students between classes 6 and 7 were involved in the task of cleaning the pit which a teacher and principal were overseeing.

Sources have it that the school did not have a warden and that an in-charge warden was managing the affairs here.

Following the development, the principal and two other staff of the school were arrested on charges of making students clean pits and corporal punishments. Chief minister Siddaramaiah also sought a report on the incident and those involved.
