Karnataka: Teachers asked to report to work half an hour early, take planned leave

March 18, 2024

The department of school education and literacy in Karnataka has asked teachers to report in school half an hour before schedule to set some time aside for preparation and to adhere to the timetable.

In a circular on Friday, the department has set guidelines for teachers and heads of schools to be able to deliver quality education to students in the wake of upcoming annual assessments and board exams for students. Guidelines for teachers encompass measures that will improve learning outcomes.

Besides, teachers have been asked to remain punctual at work and not run any other errands during this time. The guidelines specify that teachers will not be allowed to visit offices of BEOs or DDPIs for administrative duties during school hours.

School headmasters must also be informed in advance should teachers wish to apply for leave. “The role of a teacher is crucial in monitoring a child’s physical, mental, intellectual, and social development to deliver well-rounded and continuous academic progress. Every teacher must shoulder responsibilities effectively and seek prior approval for leave. Report to work on time and work towards achieving quality education for children,” the guidelines say.

For efficient implementation of government schemes, teachers and headmasters have been entrusted with the task of better coordination.

Block education officers, resource persons, deputy directors of public instruction, block resource persons and other officers have been advised to visit schools in person at least thrice a week by taking turns to check on student attendance, enrollment, and seamless conduct of annual assessments for classes 5, 8 and 9 and better facilitation for SSLC exams.

The department has also asked teachers associations to refrain from meeting department officials or participate in any activities related to the association during school hours.
