Manipur to ban history book distorting facts on Kukis, says RPI leader

November 17, 2023

Maheshwor Thounaojam, the national secretary of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), stated on Wednesday that the Manipur government is set to prohibit a class 11 history book for having “distorted contents on Kukis.”

Thounaojam informed reporters, “A section in the book alleges that some Kuki tribes had migrated in prehistoric times. This lacks any historical basis or references.”

The book in question, titled ‘History of Manipur,’ is authored by M Kaoba Singh and B Sharma.

Asserting that the state education minister, Th Basanta Singh, has assured him of the book’s ban, Thounaojam remarked, “The term ‘Kukis’ was first heard in the state between 1830 and 1840, according to former Manipur-based British officer Major James Johnstone in his 1896 book ‘Manipur and Naga Hills.'”

He added, “The unfounded assertions in the book could mislead the students. It should be prohibited.”
