Muzaffarnagar: NHRC sends notice to Chief Secretary, DGP on school slapping incident

August 30, 2023

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken notice of a media report detailing an incident in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, where a student was slapped by fellow classmates on their teacher’s instructions, along with derogatory comments about the student’s religion. The NHRC has issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and state police, requesting a comprehensive report on the matter within four weeks.

The incident, which occurred at a school in Khubbapur village, Muzaffarnagar district, gained attention after a video went viral on August 25, depicting the teacher making communal remarks and instructing students to slap a class 2 student from the Muslim community. The boy’s family has alleged that he was subjected to physical harm due to an error in multiplication tables during class.

The NHRC emphasized that if the details in the media report are accurate, they constitute a violation of the victim’s human rights. The commission has sought information about actions taken against the teacher, the status of the registered FIR, any compensation provided to the affected family, and measures implemented or planned to prevent such incidents from recurring.

As of August 28, the teacher, who is also the school owner, has not been arrested, according to the media report.
