NCPCR requests states, UTs to review school calendars amid cold weather

January 9, 2024

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has called on all states and union territories to reassess school calendars and timetables in light of the prevailing cold weather conditions that could pose “severe health implications” for children. Priyank Kanoongo, the chairperson of NCPCR, issued a notice highlighting the growing concern for schoolchildren amid the severe cold weather.

The commission observed that the recent drop in temperatures across various regions has raised worries about the well-being of students. Priyank Kanoongo emphasized the need for a thorough review of school calendars and timetables, urging authorities to make informed decisions based on the prevailing weather conditions in each state or union territory. Exposure to the cold weather, if not addressed appropriately, could lead to significant health risks for children.

In addition to recommending a review of school schedules, Kanoongo urged states and union territories to ensure that no child faces hardships either within the school premises or during their commute due to decisions made by authorities or school managements during extreme weather conditions.

Several parts of the country, particularly in northern states, are currently experiencing a cold wave, with temperatures plummeting below 5 degrees Celsius. The NCPCR’s proactive stance aims to safeguard the well-being of students by encouraging a responsive approach to the unique challenges posed by the cold weather conditions.
