The Ministry of Education on Monday ruled out any irregularities in the allotment of hostels to students in central universities, asserting that the process is transparent, merit-based, and equitable.
Responding to a written question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar stated that no complaints or discrepancies regarding hostel allotments have come to the government’s notice.
“Central universities are autonomous institutions established by Acts of Parliament and governed by their respective statutes and ordinances. The hostel allotment process is carried out by the universities themselves as per their rules, regulations, and established guidelines,” Majumdar said.
He added that hostel allocations prioritize students based on various factors, including:
- Distance of residence from the university
- Academic performance and merit
- Social category considerations, ensuring inclusivity
- Special provisions for differently abled students
Majumdar reiterated that strict guidelines are in place to prevent unfair practices and ensure equal access to hostel facilities.
In recent years, students have raised concerns about limited hostel capacity, leading to accommodation shortages in some central universities. However, the minister stated that the government and university administrations are continuously monitoring the situation to improve hostel infrastructure and availability.
“The government remains committed to ensuring that all students, especially those from economically weaker sections and marginalized communities, have access to safe and affordable accommodation in central universities,” he added.
