Afghanistan: Schools for all students to open this week

Over 1 million Afghan girls barred from school as Taliban begins new academic year

March 21, 2024

Afghanistan’s school year commenced Wednesday, but without girls, as the Taliban prohibited their education beyond the sixth grade, making it the sole country with such restrictions. The U.N. children’s agency reports that over 1 million girls are impacted by this ban, while 5 million were already out of school before the Taliban’s rule due to various factors.

In marking the new academic year, the Taliban’s education ministry held a ceremony where female journalists were barred from attending, citing a lack of suitable accommodations. Education Minister Habibullah Agha emphasized the focus on enhancing the quality of religious and modern education, with an emphasis on Islamic teachings over basic subjects.

The ministry urged students to adhere to Islamic and Afghan principles in their attire, while Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi stated efforts to expand education in remote areas. However, the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Islamic law continues to hinder progress, as they oppose girls’ education and restrict women’s participation in public life and employment.

Despite initial promises of moderation, the Taliban’s policies have drawn criticism, with Human Rights Watch condemning their educational measures as harmful to both boys and girls. The group highlights declining attendance, curriculum changes, and increased corporal punishment as detrimental factors affecting education under Taliban rule.
