Tamil Nadu: Father commits suicide a day after son takes own life for failing NEET

August 16, 2023

In a tragic line of events, the father of a NEET (National Eligibility and Entrance Test) aspirant hanged himself to death just one day after his son died by suicide.

On Saturday afternoon, the 19-year-old resident of Chennai’s Chrompet area committed suicide after he failed to clear NEET, the competitive medical exam for aspiring medicos for the second time in a row.

On Sunday, just hours after he cremated his son, Selvasekar, a photographer by profession also committed suicide unable to bear the grief of his son’s demise.

On Saturday, when Selvasekar tried to reach his son on the phone and failed even after several attempts, he sought help from the housekeeper to check. They found his son hanging.

Even as the students’ neighbours immediately rushed him to the hospital, he was declared dead.

The family said that the boy took this extreme step after he failed to clear NEET for the second time.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin said in a statement, “I was shocked to know that Jegadeeswaran from Chromepet, who was a NEET aspirant, committed suicide. When I was thinking of how to console his parents, the next day his father Selvasekar also died by suicide. “I don’t know how to console Jegadeeswaran’s family, friends, and relatives. It is horrible that a bright student who dreamt of becoming a doctor, has now joined the list of NEET suicides.”

The Tamil Nadu government has opposed NEET and has in the past said that NEET was discriminatory against students from rural areas and economically weaker sections.
