UGC releases 24 ‘fake’ universities; here’s the full list

The University Grants Commission (UGC) released a list of 24 ‘self-styled, unrecognised institutions’ in the country, terming them as ‘fake’ with maximum of them operating from Uttar Pradesh. UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said, “Students and public are informed that currently 24 self-styled, unrecognised institutions are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, which have been declared as fake universities and these are not empowered to confer any degree.”

While eight of these universities are from Uttar Pradesh, seven are from Delhi and two each from Odisha and West Bengal.

As per an official notice by the UGC, “A degree can be awarded, only a University established under a Central, State/Provisional Act or an institution deemed to be university.”

It further said, “Students and public at large are hereby informed that presently following 24 self-styled, unrecognized institutions are functioning in contravention of UGC Act, which have been declared as fake universities.”
