A 14-year-old class 9 student from Valanchery, Kerala has allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire as she was unable to attend online classes due to inadequate facilities at home. The deceased student has been identified as 14-year-old Devika, a student of Government Higher Secondary School, Irimbiliyam.

According to the police, the girl had gone missing after 4 pm on Monday. Her body was later found 100 metres away from her house next to a kerosene can. The reason the Kerala student committed suicide can be confirmed only after the inquest. Shaji M K, Valanchery Circle Inspector, told The New Indian Express that more details will be revealed after the investigation and postmortem.

However, her parents Balakrishnan and Sheeba say she was a bright students and could not tolerate missing even a single class as they did not have facilities at home for her to attend the online classes. Her parents do not have smartphones and their television set was under repair. Her parents told TNIE, “We told her that we will repair our TV soon or the school might provide her with a tablet. But, she was too disappointed as she was unable to attend online classes due to inadequate facilities in our house,” said her parents.
