Kendriya Vidyalayas are one of the most sought-after educational institutions in India, offering quality education to children of central government employees. With over 1,200 schools functioning across the country, they have become synonymous with academic excellence and a nurturing learning environment.

However, responding to a question on whether Kendriya Vidyalayas are operational in rented accommodation and if they are paying huge amounts of rent, the minister of state in the ministry of education, Subhas Sarkar, provided an update on the status of Kendriya Vidyalayas in the Lok Sabha. According to the ministry, a total of 253 KVs, or 20.2%, are currently functioning in temporary buildings provided by various sponsoring authorities.

The minister said that construction of permanent buildings for KVs is an ongoing process and depends on multiple factors such as land availability, completion of lease formalities, construction approvals, and availability of funds.
However, the good news is that no KV school is currently operational in rented accommodation, as per the information received from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS).

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of KVs operating in temporary buildings, with 23 schools functioning in such accommodation. Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, and Jammu and Kashmir follow closely with 21, 18, 16, and 16 KVs respectively operating in temporary buildings.

In addition to this, the Union Minister Subhas Sarkar recently informed the Lok Sabha that over 12,000 teaching posts in Kendriya Vidyalayas are lying vacant. While Tamil Nadu is facing the maximum crunch of teachers, the minister clarified that teachers were transferred on administrative grounds to ensure the availability of an adequate number of regular teachers in schools. The KVS has also started the process of filling up vacancies of teaching and non-teaching posts, he added.
As the education sector in India continues to evolve, it is encouraging to see the government take proactive steps to improve the infrastructure and teaching resources in Kendriya Vidyalayas. With a renewed focus on quality education, we can hope to see more children benefit from these exceptional institutions in the years to come.
