The World University Rankings 2020 by Times Higher Education was released on September 11. IIT Ropar, which made its debut this year, has topped among the the list of 56 Indian institutes, which have made it to the list. Established in 2008, it is one of the new IITs built. Although Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru shares the first rank with IIT Ropar, it’s position has slipped from the 251-300 group ranking last year to 301-350 rank this year.
IIT Indore took the second spot among the Indian institutes last year and came in the 351-400 group ranking. Meanwhile, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur are in the third spots and among the 401-500 universities global rankings. Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Panjab University, Savitribai Phule Pune University and Thapar University have been ranked among the 601-800 group. Odisha’s KIIT University and Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan have also made it to the list and are among the best universities of the world.
On the downside, Mysore’s Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeswara (JSS) Academy of Higher Education & Research which shared among the top spot along with IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee last year, has not been ranked this year.
The University of Oxford leads the rankings in first place for the fourth year in a row, while the California Institute of Technology has jumped to the second spot from last year’s fifth and the University of Cambridge has ranked third. Other universities in the top 10 includes Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, University of Chicago, and Imperial College London.
