St Joseph’s University Bengaluru has made appointments for its senior leadership roles. Fr. Dionysius Vaz SJ is the first chancellor of the recently formed university.
The varsity is all set to start its session from the academic year 2022-23. Fr Swebert D’Silva SJ has been appointed the pro-chancellor while Dr Victor Lobo SJ will be the vice-chancellor of the university. Dr Melwin Colaco is set to take charge as registrar.
According to the varsity, the varsity will function on a Public Private Partnership model which sets them apart from the other universities in the country.
It may be recollected that the college was given varsity status in July 2022 officially under the Central government’s Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan scheme. This is the only private aided college in the country to be given the status under this scheme. The process of upgrading the college to a university began in 2013 when the college had applied under the RUSA scheme.
The college was Founded by Fathers of the French Foreign Mission, affiliated to the University of Madras as a Second Grade College in 1882. Later in 1926, University of Madras granted the Institution the status of a First Grade College. In 1949, following the reorganization of states, the college came to be affiliated under Mysore University and then on to Bangalore University nearly two decades later. The college also earned its reputation for being the first affiliated college in the state to offer post graduate courses and also have a research centre of its own. The college is managed by Karnataka Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
