Madhya Pradesh: 100 students of Physical Education Institute suffer food poisoning

October 4, 2023

Approximately 100 students from a government-operated physical education institute in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, were rushed to a hospital on Wednesday due to suspected food poisoning, according to officials.

The students had eaten a paneer (cottage cheese) dish, and an investigation into the food served at the institute’s mess is currently underway. Around 100 students from the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education were admitted to the Jayarogya Hospital, a government-run facility, on Tuesday, as stated by its superintendent, RKS Dhakad.

The cause of their illness is believed to be food poisoning, potentially linked to the consumption of paneer sabji, said Dhakad. While some students are in a serious condition, the situation is reportedly under control.

Amit Yadav, the institute’s registrar, initially suspected that some students were suffering from viral fever when they fell ill on Tuesday. However, medical examinations revealed an infection, and by Tuesday evening, almost 100 students had fallen ill. Yadav noted that nearly 70 of them have responded well to treatment, and all students are currently under medical observation, with none in critical condition.

The food served in the institute’s mess is undergoing scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation.
