The Indian Institute of Science has, for the first time since 2015 slipped ranks in the Asia University rankings of Times Higher Education.
The Asia University Rankings 2023 of the Times Higher Education was released on Thursday. The rankings have it that although the premier Indian Institute of Science tops the list among all universities in the country, it has slipped to rank 48, the lowest since it entered the competition in 2015. IISc is also the only institute from the country to appear in Asia’s top 50. It was ranked #42 in 2022.
In this 11th edition of the Asia University Rankings, 669 universities have been ranked, up from 616 last year. “Thirty-three nations are represented, with the most universities coming from Japan (117), followed by China (95), India (75), Iran (65) and Turkey (61),” as per THE data.
Among the top three on the list are two universities from China in the first two ranks- the Tsinghua University and Peking University while the National University of Singapore is ranked #3.
The trends have it that India which has traditionally put on the list the highest number of universities has fared poorly compared to its neighbours.
As many as 32 universities from Pakistan have made it to the list of top 200 universities, making it the country with the highest number of universities on the list. India, however added just one more compared to the previous year with a mere 18 varsities on the top 200 list.
