Overview

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Shimoga, Karnataka is a coeducational residential school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. The school was founded in 1986 by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Spread across 30 acres, the school campus caters to the needs of about 540 students and 45 staff members. JNV Shimoga is one of the 33 Smart Schools of India which provide students and teachers opportunity to integrate the latest technology in education.

Campus

Measuring about 30 acres, the school campus hosts a well stocked library, spacious classrooms, computer lab, examination room, well equipped laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, and social science. The school also houses a resource room, sports and games room, central store room, a multipurpose hall and a playground.

There are five television sets, three placed in the mess, one in the multipurpose hall and one in girls’ dormitory. Students are allowed to watch TV weekly for limited hours.

Academics

Although the school is affiliated with CBSE, the state syllabus is followed in classes VI and VII while in classes VIII to XII, CBSE syllabus is followed. It is proposed to start NCERT syllabus right from class VI from the 2016-17 academic session.

The medium of instruction is mother tongue/regional language up to class VII during which proper emphasis is laid on Hindi and English. Students are taught in English from class VIII onwards.

The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system of assessment is followed with each academic year having six Monday cycle tests and two terminal examinations for the students of non board classes. The board class students appear for the board examination conducted by CBSE in March every year apart from one terminal examination and six Monday cycles tests.

Admission

Admission in JNVs is made through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) at Class VI. The medium of instruction in JNVs is the mother tongue or regional language up to class VIII and English thereafter for math, science and Hindi for social science. Students of the JNVs appear for X and XII class examinations of the CBSE.

JNVST is of nonverbal nature, class neutral and designed to ensure that talented children from the rural areas are able to compete without facing any disadvantages and also to ensure that children from far flung rural areas get admission forms free of cost without any problem.

Achievement

JNV Shimoga aims to preserve the local folk arts of Karnataka such as Dollu Kunitha and Yakshagana and acts as a pace setting institution in the district by extending co-operation to neighborhood schools and community.
