Overview

Founded in 1999, Sankalp, Chennai is a special needs education school promoted by the Sankalp Trust, a not-for-profit organisation. It caters to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD).

Sankalp’s vision is founded on the belief that the fundamental base for the care of special needs children is an environment that is healthy, encouraging, supportive and above all, loving.

Campus

The infrastructure at Sankalp, Chennai is well equipped with play and educational material with comfortable seating, hygienic facilities and a cheerful ambience.

Academics

The academic programme at Sankalp, Chennai is designed specifically to suit individual needs depending on the student’s ability. The centre focuses on developing a student’s communication skills, social skills and daily to day life skills rather than just academics.

The Founder Directors Mrs. Lakshmi Krishnakumar, Mrs. Sulata Ajit, and Mrs. Subhashini Rao  ensure that the institution has a well-rounded faculty that includes Remedial Teachers, Special Educators, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Vocational trainers and assisting staff. Profiles of the faculty bear a host of competencies that stem from a wide range of educational backgrounds and experience enabling the institution to cater to the varying challenges and developmental requirements of the children under their care. At Sankalp, the teacher student ratio is 1:3. Sankalp conducts Teacher Training programs in Learning Disability and Autism, with the aim of building a cadre of highly trained teachers.

Children between four to seven years of age may attend a mainstream or regular school during the morning session and attend Sankalp’s special needs programme in the afternoon for remedial help.

Other eclectic (diverse) approaches are as follows:

Behaviour modification is achieved through rewards and restraint to root out and replace undesirable behaviour patterns detected in the child.

Structured teaching approaches are followed by structuring the classroom environment through audio/visual aids.

Social stories help children with autism to become more independent, maintain routines, and gain knowledge on how to perform an activity, ask for help or respond appropriately to feelings of anger and frustration.

Music has a therapeutic value and can make a difference in the lives of people by enhancing the quality of life and the psychological, physical, cognitive and social functioning.

Art and craft and Skill Training can be used as a form of psychotherapy that utilises art materials and the processes involved in making art.

Relaxation therapy is used to help children relax and stay calm especially while preparing to meet a stressful situation. Yoga is taught to the students at Sankalp to help them relax and cope with sleep disorders that are common among Autistic children.
