Overview

National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore, a co-educational autonomous institute, is the state’s second oldest and Mysore’s first institute of engineering. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma courses in Engineering, Doctoral Programmes in Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Production Engineering. All its courses are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education.

NIE Mysore boasts a good placement track record with about 40 companies visiting the institute campus for recruitment every year. Statistics showing almost 100 percent placement. Some of the top recruiters visiting NIEM are Infosys, Wipro, IBM, Oracle, TVS Motor Co., Mercedes Benz, Bosch Ltd, BEL, JSW Steels Ltd, Kennametal India, L & T Group, LG Electronics, Mahindra 2 Wheelers, Nestle India ltd, TATA Group, and Volvo India Ltd.

Campus

Situated at a distance of about five km from Mysore City Railway Station and City Bus Station, the National Institute of Engineering campus spreads across 18 acres facilitating a state-of-the-art campus with three blocks – Golden Jubilee Block, Administrative Block and the Diamond Jubilee Sports Complex. With over five auditoriums, a wide sports playground, emergency medical response center, libraries, lecture and seminar halls, fully-equipped labs and in-house indoor sports facilities, NIE offers an enviable infrastructure.

The sports complex has been constructed with a built up area of 4,000 sq.ft. and caters to indoor games such as Basket Ball, Table Tennis, Wrestling, and Billiards, and can accommodate up to 1,500 spectators. The complex also houses a well-equipped modern Gymnasium and Health Centre.

The institute library and information centre is one of the best engineering college libraries in the state of Karnataka, with a collection of about 76,000 volumes. The library has a rich collection of abstracts, directories, yearbooks, biographical sources, textbooks, thesis, dissertations, encyclopedias and general books including Kannada novels. It has subscription to over 57 technical journals, and 30 general magazines. Digital library with 20 systems to access the E-Journals, E-books, CD/DVD’s is also available in the library.

Banking facility is also available on campus. Hostels are available for both boys and girls.

Extracurricular Activities: NIE Mysore promotes a number of professional societies such as IEEE – the world’s leading professional association, ACM – Association for Computing Machinery, CSI – Computer Society of India, ISTE – Indian Society for Technical Education, and IEINDIA – Institute of Engineers (India), among others. It also promotes cultural clubs which hold a number of events throughout the year. NIEM students are encouraged to participate in sports and enroll for National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS).

General Information

Admission

For admission to the undergraduate courses, the candidate should have passed the second year pre-university or class XII or equivalent examination with physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one of the following subjects :- chemistry, bio-technology, computer science, biology, and electronics with at least 45 percent aggregate marks in optional subjects and with English as one of the languages.

To be eligible for admission, the minimum marks (aggregate) is 40 percent in optional subjects in case of candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and other Backward Classes categories. Admission to the institute will be made according to directives of AICTE and Karnataka government as applicable to each academic year.

For postgraduate programmes, admission is open to all candidates who have passed B.E./B.Tech examinations (in relevant field) of VTU or any other university recognised by this university or any other examination recognised by this university as equivalent with not less than 50 percent (45 percent in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST) aggregate marks.

The selection is based on the performance in the qualifying examination, and Karnataka PGCET (Postgraduate Common Entrance Test). Preference will be given to candidates qualified in GATE.

For admissions to M.Sc. and doctoral programmes, admissions are as per regulations of VTU.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked NIE 175 among engineering colleges in India in 2020. NIE was ranked 28 in Outlook India’s “India’s Top 150 Engineering Colleges in 2019” and 49 in The Week-Hansa Research’s “Best Colleges Survey 2019: Top Engineering Colleges – All India”.

NIE Mysore was also ranked among the top 20 private engineering colleges by Education World India Engineering Colleges Rankings 2020-21.

Accommodation

NIE provides separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls. The hostel for boys (280 seats) is situated behind the NIE campus while the hostel for girls with 60 inmates is sited at a distance of about one km from the institute. The hostels are equipped with solar water heaters for round-the-clock hot water supply, television set and facilities for indoor games have been provided.
